Do men even work in white-collar America anymore?

I recently interviewed for a position and here’s how it went…

As I walked into this multi-level office building… I would guess maybe 70% (or more) of the employees were women. I walked into the elevator and was greeted by 3 women who were on their way to the office and asked if I needed help. I finally made it to the top of the building where my interview was located and the entire department where I would be working is compromised of 100% women. My supervisor would have been a woman (as would my colleagues) for that particular department.

The sole male interviewer said at the end, that they were not in a rush and were looking for the right “culture fit” without explaining what that meant. I often think back to this video clip of Clark Griswald at the office. Notice something you DON’T see today? Men actually working at the office.

If that movie came out today, the ratio of women in this clip would have been 10:1 in favor of women.

In the past: In another case, I was working for a company in the sports industry that saw an 100% team of female coworkers (except me) and the result was very negative. My internship while in college was all-female office staff working for one of the biggest non-profits in that town.

Some random thoughts regarding this topic…

Female entrepreneurship has state-backed advantages over men: I was doing some research and noticed the state I live in has multiple, if not hundreds of grants for female business owners and professionals. Upon doing some more searches, men have zero gender-specific grants available to them. Taking male and female genders born into an equally wealthy family, females now have more business creating opportunities at their disposal thanks to various government incentives.

Anti-male rhetoric and the hiring process: One also has to wonder too how much one sided HR policies favoring women in the workplace are also influencing hiring decisions. The amount of companies I have worked for that showed made-up scenarios during HR training insinuating men are dirt-bags were not only insane, but also quite disrespectful. To me this is literally the definition of corporate propaganda. Effectively castrating men while ignoring potential malicious female behavior in the work place is a very hypocritical, one-sided stance to take.
