Are things heading in the right direction for humanity itself? I would say not after reading this press release by Mattel.
When I say “eugenics” I am referring to the old meaning with regard to human experimentation and modification.
My biggest frustration is why we are “normalizing” ….and in turn adding a stigma… for responding in a negative fashion to things that are certainly not “normal”. (Especially not historically)
Some quotes from the above article:
- “Among its features are special joints in the elbows and wrists that allow movements associated with stimming, a repetitive behavior many people use to self-regulate sensory input. In addition, the doll has a slightly averted gaze, alluding to the difficulty some autistic people may experience with direct eye contact.”
- “The design is completed with inclusive accessories such as noise-canceling headphones and a fidget spinner — tools that help manage sensory overload and anxiety.”
They don’t want kids largely becoming non-participants in society thanks to “autism” to look at toys and go… “why am I not normal”.
We should not be “celebrating” things like Autism with making a toy line essentially de-stigmatizing the condition. Because eventually people will not bat an eye at clear irregularities in our environment.
Somewhat unrelated but worth mentioning that the Barbie brand seems to have feminist undertones.
