I have had more than 5 accounts banned on Reddit while not violating anything clear on the website.
A few of my accounts were banned by website mods while the others were effectively banned as a result of “too much negative comment karma”.
Reddit condoning humiliation and mob threats: I also had one of my posts “re-posted” without my consent on “Reddit Facepalm” …where it got tens of thousands of upvotes essentially ridiculing my comment. I then received threatening DM’s for weeks before it finally subsided.
The many issues Reddit has:
- The karma system on Reddit means if you get downvoted too much… or someone decides to downvote over and over for whatever reason…you cannot post on a majority of sub-reddit’s effectively banning your account. Reddit’s message is more or less: “have a popular opinion and never question anything …or possibly be banned on the website”
- Reddit encourages profile stalking, harassment, and other nasty behavior due to loose privacy settings on the website if you post something that goes against the popular narrative. Even if you make your profile “private” people can still search your username on the website showing where you have posted. Users who post something against popular narrative are open game for insults and other behavior that would normally be discouraged. I have noticed this with other traditional forums as well where bullying and harassment is condoned by mods if someone posts something that runs contrary to popular narrative.
- There is a conflict of interest with many subs and who mods them. There is no way to tell who is essentially a corporate “gatekeeper”.
- I have also seen mods who are “official streaming partners” with various companies who are not going to be objective when it comes to modding.
Other popular websites like Twitch have similar issues where the website actually encourages streamers to ban free speech and thought if it goes against various topics.
